The man can do no wrong. Listening to Flying Lotus' third album 'Cosmogramma' on a watermarked, one-track cd promo – the kind that promotes solitary skip-free contemplation 'round midnight – it swiftly hits you just how talented the 20-something producer really is.
The intricacy of composition and engineering of sound that not even the crude reproduction of laptop speakers can diminish. The clue's in the album title: sound is more than a pleasurable filler of time and space; it's the deepest form of communication; global yet truly personal from listener to listener.
A vital link between the free jazz warriors of the experimental seventies, latter-day Dilla and today's renegade bassheads, no one has done more to raise the integrity and stretch the ambition of hip hop from FlyLo.
And not content with crafting entrancing worlds of sound for new talents such as Flying Lotus, Gonja Sufi and Andreya Triana (check that euphoric remix of 'Lost Where I Belong' – aaaagh), he's also founded a thriving community for impossibly young and gifted producers (www.brainfeedersite.com).
Warp insist that we remain tight-lipped about the specifics of this album but they've been kind enough to share this streamable taster from 'Cosmogramma': 'Computer Face/Pure Being'.
